Our Company

WHY SHOULD I PURCHASE PRODUCTS FROM GR8LKS?

By purchasing a GR8LKS eco-friendly product, it goes toward the removal of trash from the great lakes and coastlines. This purchase represents your commitment to cleaning the great lakes and to raise awareness of the GR8LKS movement.

WHERE DO YOU HOST CLEAN-UPS?

The GR8LKS team plans to constantly move along the Great Lakes coastline to help keep all beaches and Great Lakes clean. The GR8LKS team plans to host both onshore and offshore cleanups. Onshore beach cleanups are an effective way to prevent trash from entering the Great Lakes whereas offshore cleanups are very effective to remove trash that has already entered the Great Lakes.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TRASH?

All of the trash we collect is rinsed and sorted. After that, it is analyzed to be recycled. If it can possibly be recycled such as glass and plastic, it is brought to a local recycling center. If it is considered non-recyclable it is disposed of as such at a reputable waste facility.

WHY DO YOU USE VOLUNTEERS?

Volunteers help GR8LKS to raise awareness through hands-on experiences and keeps our effectiveness high through beach clean-up events.

Always Eco-Friendly

WHAT DOES “ECO-” MEAN?

This is an Eco-friendly fabric, created by blending traditional fibers with organic cotton.  Eco-spun polyester (which is made from recycled bottles "RPET") and rayon made from converted plant cellulose.

WHAT IS RPET?

RPET stands for Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate, or recycled PET. RPET is made from recycled polyesters, recycled plastics and pure, 100% organic cotton; RPET fabric blends are usually in a 50/50 ratio. Furthermore, 90% less water is used in the making of RPET clothing, dramatically decreasing negative environmental impact. Our products that contain RPET yarn are made using recycled bottles. The amount of bottles per style may vary.

WHY USE RPET FABRICS?

51 billion plastic bottles go to the landfills annually and it will take 700 years before plastic bottles in landfills start to decompose. Recycling 1 ton of RPET containers saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space with RPET polyester fabric also having a 50% lower carbon footprint than organic cotton.

WHY USE ORGANIC COTTON?

It wasn’t too long ago when conventionally grown cotton was the only method in cotton farming. This method, however, accounted for over 10% total pesticide use and nearly 25% of insecticides used worldwide. There is no doubt it created a lot of harm for people, wildlife and the environment. Growing organic cotton takes longer, requires more skill and currently costs more, but we at GR8LKS think it’s worth it.

IS THE ORGANIC COTTON CERTIFIED?

Yes, the manufacturers we use for our products are certified by the GOTS, which stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. Please click here to see more information regarding GOTS.

DO YOU USE ECO-FRIENDLY DYES?

We utilize non-toxic, low-impact dyes on all Eco-fabrics.  The dyes we use do not contain heavy metals or toxic substances and have a high fixation or absorption rate, which means using less dye to generate our colors.  The dye houses our manufacturers work with perform frequent inspections in order to check all equipment and sample water and filtration residue for any toxins.
